Liverpool 4 - 4 Arsenal

Four goals from Andrey Arshavin put a huge dent in Liverpool's Barclays Premier League title hopes as Arsenal drew 4-4 at Anfield.

The hosts went ahead of Manchester United on goal difference having come from behind three times, starting with Arshavin's first in the 36th minute.

Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun scored soon after the interval but three further goals from the Russian Gunner piled the pressure back on Rafael Benitez's side and even a second from Torres and an injury-time equaliser from Benayoun were not enough to force victory.

The result hands a huge advantage to United, who have two matches in hand with the first tomorrow at home to Portsmouth.

Liverpool were architects of their own downfall as the first three Arsenal goals came from mistakes.

It was almost a carbon copy of their Champions League exit against Chelsea a week ago when a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge saw them miss out on the semi-finals.

It was also not the first time Arsenal had done serious damage to a Liverpool title challenge, it being 20 years since Michael Thomas scored on this ground with the last kick of the season to deny the Reds the championship.

Torres and Albert Riera should have done better with their early efforts to test the fragile confidence of Lucasz Fabianski but both fired straight at the goalkeeper.

Javier Mascherano fired wide after 15 minutes as Arsenal were content to soak up what Liverpool had to offer and swiftly counter-attack when the chance arose.

Those occasions were few and far between and Fabianski, who had looked shaky on a couple of occasions, had to be at his best to tip over Torres' shot from the right angle of the penalty area.

Referee Howard Webb waved away Liverpool appeals in the 26th minute when Mikael Silvestre appeared to catch Dirk Kuyt on the edge of the area.

Arsenal's first chance came when they broke quickly from a Liverpool corner and Cesc Fabregas volleyed wide after Daniel Agger, making his 50th league appearance, had got in Jose Reina's way as he tried to punch clear.

A smart turn by Torres on Kolo Toure saw the Spain striker fire in a 25-yard shot which Fabianski could only parry but Silvestre cleared the danger.

Samir Nasri then had to clear off the line at the far post after Agger flicked on Xabi Alonso's right-wing corner before the Gunners hit their hosts with a sucker punch in the 36th minute.

Mascherano lost the ball on the edge of the penalty area and Fabregas exchanged passes with Nasri before crossing for Arshavin to fire home off the underside of the crossbar.

Benayoun immediately brought a diving save from Fabianski and then headed over as Liverpool piled on the pressure leading up to the interval without reward.

Liverpool realistically had 45 minutes to keep their season alive and that realisation brought the equaliser within four minutes of the restart.

Alvaro Arbeloa's cross was poorly dealt with by Bacary Sagna and Kuyt collected the ball, got to the byline and crossed for Torres to head low into the left corner of Fabianski's goal.

Seven minutes later they were ahead. Fabianski and Kieren Gibbs both messed up their clearances and Kuyt crossed to the far post where Benayoun headed in.

The goalkeeper claimed to have clawed the ball out but it was clearly over the line.

In the 65th minute Arsene Wenger brought on Theo Walcott for Denilson to try to get back in the game but it was another mistake which brought their equaliser.

Arbeloa could not control Jamie Carragher's downward defensive header and Arshavin nipped in to fire past Reina's outstretched left hand.

Incredibly for a team which had conceded just eight goals in 16 home league matches a third error handed Arsenal the lead again.

Fabio Aurelio played a left-wing cross straight to Arshavin 10 yards out and he drilled a shot under Reina for his hat-trick in the 70th minute.

Amazingly Liverpool were level again two minutes later when Torres controlled Riera's cross, turned Silvestre and fired past Fabianski.

Torres had a header cleared off the line by Gibbs from Alonso's corner with nine minutes to go and Carragher fired over from Aurelio's cross as Liverpool desperately pushed for the winner.

And that cost them as Walcott broke from a corner and played in Arshavin to score his fourth in injury time.

Benayoun bundled home an equaliser even later on but it was too late to force a victory.

It’s a mark of raised expectation for Rafael Benitez’s side this season that moving clear at the top of the table was met with such disappointment last night. Liverpool 3-2 Wigan

Dirk Kuyt scored twice as Liverpool came from behind to beat Wigan

Dirk Kuyt's scissor-kick five minutes from time gave Liverpool all three points against 10-man Wigan in a pulsating game at Anfield.

Amr Zaki gave the visitors the lead after a mistake from Daniel Agger, but Kuyt fired Liverpool level.

On the stroke of half-time Zaki scored a spectacular overhead-kick to restore Wigan's lead, before Antonio Valencia was sent-off for two bookable offences.

The home side hit back through Albert Riera, before Kuyt's late winner.

The result is harsh on a Wigan side who, until Valencia's sending off, looked good value for at least a point.

Wigan played with great confidence and, with the inspirational Zaki up front, they always looked as though they would cause Liverpool problems.

Even without the injured Emile Heskey, missing with a back injury, Liverpool struggled to cope with Wigan's movement, pace and greater desire.

In contrast Liverpool, missing striker Fernando Torres, appeared disjointed and failed to put any meaningful attacks together.

Olivier Kapo, playing in a front three alongside Zaki and Daniel de Ridder, was the first to test Pepe Reina as his low left-foot shot was turned away by the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Robbie Keane curled wide as Liverpool started to feel their way into the game, but a minute later Zaki gave his side the lead after a horrendous error by Agger.

The Danish defender received the ball from Reina on the edge of his own area, but he was far too casual in possession and the Egyptian striker was on hand to rob the ball before coolly slotting it home.

However, Agger made amends 10 minutes later as he drove forward from defence, exchanged passes with Andrea Dossena and cut the ball back for Kuyt to fire home. Agger berjaya menebus dosanya. Nasib baik gak masuk.

Suddenly the confidence returned to Liverpool's play and Kuyt nearly grabbed a second as he unleashed a rasping shot from 20 yards that Kirkland somehow managed to tip onto the crossbar.

But they were stung on the stroke of half-time as Zaki met Antonio Valencia's cross with a brilliant scissor-kick that gave Reina no chance.

After the break Liverpool started to turn the screw and Lee Cattermole was on hand to clear Daniel Agger's header back across goal with Robbie Keane lurking at the far post.

Kuyt was then denied again by Kirkland from six yards as the home side struggled to break Wigan's resistance.

However, when Valencia was given his marching orders for two bookable offences, the game swung in Liverpool's favour.

RAFA PLEASED WITH PRE-SEASON PREPARATIONS

As Rafael Benitez prepares to send his side into pre-season action for the third time this evening, he has taken time out to salute the stars of the Reds' warm-up campaign so far.

With two victories behind them and a number of individuals catching the eye, there are plenty of reasons for the boss to feel positive about the early stages of pre-season - but he knows there is much more still to come. Asked who has impressed him most during the pre-season, Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I will not say Pacheco because everyone is talking about him. "Voronin played really well the other day and Lucas did well. It is also very positive to see Daniel Agger playing again. It's very positive for us to see the likes of Pacheco, Lucas and Voronin playing really well. "All of the players are training very well and really hard. They are enjoying the training we are doing and that is the balance that you are looking for - to work hard and also to enjoy it. "They are working really hard and you need to push them. We have been doing some tactical and technical work and we have also had the players in the gym as well. The physical level of the players is getting better and better after every training session. "When you play a game you know sometimes they will be a little bit tired but this is pre-season and that is the idea. They are all doing really well." The manager also revealed that new boys Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena have made a good impact since their arrival in new surroundings. "It is totally different for them because it is a new language," said Benitez. "I was talking today with Philipp and Andrea and we were speaking in English and trying to encourage them. I think they are trying to settle down quickly. "We still have the four Spanish players on holiday and Dirk Kuyt arrived with us on Wednesday. When we bring all of the players back together it will be good for us because the understanding between them will be much better." The manager also revealed his work never stops when it comes to trying to bring in new reinforcements, despite him being away from his Melwood office. "My mobile is always on and it must be like this at this time," said Benitez. "If we can find the targets then that will be good."

RAFA: AGGER LOSS COST US TITLE SHOT

The loss of Daniel Agger cost Liverpool a shot at the Premier League title last season, according to Rafa Benitez.

The manager's words came as his Danish defender returned to pre-season training at Melwood having missed most of 2007-08 with a metatarsal break. Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I think it cost us early in the season. We conceded goals at the end of games which finished as draws because Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher were playing too many games in a row. "We were using Jack Hobbs in some games and Alvaro Arbeloa as a centre-back; clearly we missed Daniel Agger. "He is a centre-back but good on the ball and a threat for the other team too. We missed Agger." Benitez tried to sign Gabriel Heinze from Manchester United last summer as cover but the move proved impossible. Instead Liverpool had to wait until January for top-class reinforcements by the name of Martin Skrtel. The Slovak made an impressive start to his Anfield career and will ensure that competition is fierce for central defensive places this season. Benitez added: "We knew this player when he was 18. It was funny because some people were going to see Everton against Zenit and were saying this player really has ability. But we already had four or five videos of him which we liked. We had already sent our people over there and we knew he was the player for us. "It can be difficult to settle down in this country but Martin has been really good. "We know the players we want whenever the window opens and we try to sign the players at the right price."

DOSSENA SIGNS FOUR-YEAR DEAL

Andrea Dossena has today put pen to paper on a four-year Anfield deal.

The Italian full-back becomes Rafael Benitez's second acquisition of the summer following the arrival of Swiss international Philipp Degen. Dossena, who has been capped once at senior level by Italy, is seen as the ideal replacement for John Arne Riise, who departed for Roma earlier this month. The 26-year-old began his career aged 14 with Hellas Verona in northern Italy, coming through the ranks before spending four seasons in the senior squad. His big break came when he signed for Udinese in 2005, though he was immediately loaned to Treviso FBC 1993 for a year. The defender returned to the Stadio Friuli ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, where his form eventually saw him make his international bow in a friendly against South Africa in October 2007. By the end of the season his move to Merseyside had been confirmed, with Dossena saying: "Liverpool are a great team, and it is great to be linked to such a famous club. I want to play Champions League football, the Reds have already won it and they often get to the big games. In England, they are on the same level as Manchester United."

"Fernando is a great player for Liverpool and for our team and he can go anywhere because he has really extraordinary speed and he knows how to dribble," Aragones said. "We always tell him he's a player who is so young that he can learn to do everything and there is no doubt he can be one of the best players in the world." Many observers have expressed the opinion that Spain's success is a triumph for football and Aragones agrees with this belief, hailing his side's pass-and-move philosophy. "I think people will look up to this Spain and how we play," said the 69-year-old, who is set to be replaced as coach by former Real Madrid boss Vicente Del Bosque. "I said if we manage this group well, we will be champions. They are so good. I hope Spain will go on in this way," Aragones continued. "The only thing I have to say to the manager who comes after me is to please treat them (the players) well and let them do their job. "I have the mental strength to do it, and others may not have it."

TORRES - A LEGEND IN THE MAKING

Pedro Calvo always knew Fernando Torres would go on to become one of the world's best players. Here the Atletico Madrid youth coach reveals all in an interview with BBC Sport about the man who last night fired Spain to Euro glory.

Calvo coached Torres during his time in Atletico Madrid's youth academy and is quick to recall how special the Reds forward was - even back then. Before Spain's Euro 2008 Group D opener against Russia, Calvo spoke to BBC Sport about his time working with the young forward and how he always believed he would go on to become a striking great. CALVO ON COACHING TORRES He was one of the best players I had seen in a long time, so I was very excited when I found out I had the opportunity to coach him. And he's the same person now as he was when he was a young boy. He continues to be a player that epitomises teamwork, humility, and goodwill. That's why he captained almost all the teams he represented. Then, as now, one of the most important aspects of his game was his pace, in addition to his composure in front of goal. When most young players, around the age of 13, would get nervous at the crucial moment, Fernando would excel. CALVO ON TORRES MAKING THE GRADE I always knew he'd make it as a professional. I never had any doubts. In fact, I still have an article that was published in the newspaper Marca when we were about to compete in the European tournament after winning the Under-14 Spanish Championship title. We had a young team with many boys who later became world-famous players and I had always said that if Fernando continued to progress he would achieve similar success. Fernando had great leadership qualities on and off the pitch. Sometimes footballers learn from their experiences and grow in maturity. Others put their ego first but this was never the case with Fernando. If he didn't play because of injury, other players missed him. He was often the difference on the pitch, the one who could change the course of a game with his skill and vision. CALVO ON THE STRIKER'S GOALSCORING He always led the line. And he always took the penalties. That was his speciality but free-kicks were never his forte. He always took responsibility when there was a penalty but everyone agreed that he was the best person to take them. They trusted him. Furthermore, he would always help others on the pitch, encouraging his teammates, and impressing his determined attitude and mentality on the team. CALVO ON THE SPAIN STAR'S FAMILY Fernando's family has always been very close to him, helping him through good and bad times and he has always been surrounded by coaches, such as myself or Abraham Garcia, the current coach of Atletico Madrid B. We have always tried to guide him in the right direction. Fernando always accepted help and advice. He analysed everything we told him in order to make the right decisions. And he has always been a very intelligent player, always level-headed when it came to making important decisions. CALVO ON MOVING TO ENGLAND Because I know him both on a personal and professional level, I think the English league, above the Italian and Spanish leagues, was the best choice for Fernando. So I'm not surprised as to how quickly he has adapted. I think that some Atletico fans assumed he would take a little more time to settle. Even in England I don't think people expected him to start as well as he has. But I think Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is still expecting a lot more from Fernando in years to come. He's obviously helped him adapt quickly and he doesn't have the same sort of responsibility that he held at Atletico, like being named captain when he was only 18, and carrying the weight of an entire club on his shoulders. Fernando is an incredible player with the potential to change the face of football. I believe that he will continue to improve and go on to achieve even greater success.

TORRES: THANK-YOU, LIVERPOOL

Fernando Torres has issued a heartfelt 'thank-you' to LFC and its followers for helping him become a European champion.

El Nino scored the winning goal as Spain won their first trophy since 1964 on Sunday – an achievement he insists would not have been possible without the support of the Red half of Merseyside during the last year. He said: "It is a dream come true and now we have a place in European history, so it is very special. "It is my first major title but I hope it will be the first of many because I want to win many more titles with Liverpool and Spain. "I would like to thank the staff and players at Liverpool for their support during Euro 2008 because it makes a real difference when you know you have the backing of the people of your club. Because of this they share in our success. "I have had a wonderful first season at Anfield and the goals I scored for Liverpool gave me the confidence and belief I needed for the Euros. Again, I would like to thank Rafa and his staff because I have improved as a player thanks to them. "But it isn't just the people at the club who have helped me, it is also the supporters and the people of the city. "From the moment I first came to Liverpool I have been made to feel welcome and that is why I am able to enjoy my football so much. "It is incredible because the Liverpool fans have given me so much support and I know that they have even been supporting Spain. This is something I will never forget and I thank everyone for that. "Now I am looking forward to competing for trophies with the Reds because I know that means so much to the club and the fans." Torres - along with countrymen Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina - will now be given three weeks' rest before returning to Melwood for pre-season training. Eighteen members of Rafa Benitez's squad returned today, with more set to follow over the next week.

RAFA: TORRES PROVED CRITICS WRONG

Rafa Benitez has spoken of his pride after Fernando Torres confounded his critics to fire Spain to their first major honour since 1964.

The Liverpool boss admits certain sections of the Spanish press were critical of the striker's performances in Euro 2008. However, El Nino's winning goal against Germany on Sunday night has made him a national hero – and Benitez believes the strike will be talked about for decades to come. He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I am very proud, especially after he has been criticised from some journalists in Spain. "Everyone remembers the Marcelino goal from 44 years ago, and the last final Spain were in was 24 years ago. Now people will talk about Torres in the same way." Benitez watched the goal from the comfort of his sofa, from where he was in no doubt the best team won. "Spain played well. For 10 minutes at the start of each half Germany were pressing, but after that Spain controlled the game," he said. "The first goal changed the game. After that Metzelder pushed forward and Torres was left one versus one. Spain could play on the counter and that was important. "They had three or four players in the middle with real quality and played good football." Torres and Spanish counterparts Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina will now be given three weeks' rest before returning to Melwood ahead of the new campaign.

Racism at football matches may not be as widespread as it was when John Barnes was first blossoming as a player in the 80s but it still exists - just ask Momo Sissoko, for example, the target for unforgivable racist abuse while playing abroad.

If you are the target for racial abuse or hear or see someone making racist comments or gestures at a football match, you should immediately report it to your nearest steward or police officer.

Racist abuse at football matches is against the law so the police and stewards can take action. Anyone found guilty of racist behaviour at the match can be ejected from the ground, arrested or even have their Season Ticket taken off them for life.

Racism is the belief that because people are a different colour, or from another country or part of the world, they are inferior but racist behaviour also includes threatening, abusing or insulting a person because of their colour, race, nationality or creed.

John Barnes, a target for racist fans when he first joined Liverpool, insists that racism is a problem in society not just football and has called for all fans - particularly white fans - to make a stand if they hear racist abuse from supporters whether they're watching Liverpool home or away.

"If you look at the Civil Rights marches in America in the sixties, the biggest impact of these marches was the fact that there were white people marching against racism with Martin Luther King," insists the Liverpool legend. "So if you are in the stands and you hear racism, you say something about it. If the reaction is from a white person I think that it will hit home harder that what they are doing is actually wrong."

Liverpool Football Club has long been working hard to eradicate racism at Anfield and in January 2006 these efforts were recognised when it was awarded the Preliminary Level of the Racial Equality Standard for Professional Football Clubs.

The RES sets out a number of measures in a framework document to encourage and support the development of racial equality practices at professional clubs.

The Standard developed by 'Kick It Out' and backed by football's governing bodies formalises a Club's commitment towards ensuring that spectators, players, management and staff are able to work within an environment that is free of discrimination and encourages community accessibility.

The Standard consists of three levels of achievement:- PRELIMINARY, INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED and each of these cover three area�s of activity which must be supported by relevant evidence and then verified by an independent accreditation panel. To successfully achieve each of these levels the club must demonstrate the following:-

PRELIMINARY
The Club will have demonstrated a commitment to racial equality by producing a written equal opportunities policy and a race equality plan for all areas of activity.
The plan which will be monitored shall include an assessment of the Club's current supporter base, community development targets and clearly defined guidelines for dealing with incidents of racial abuse.

INTERMEDIATE
The Club will have demonstrated clear improvements in its levels of service as a result of monitoring, consultation with local ethnic minority community groups and implementation of its action plan. The Club must be able to show clear evidence of how it has implemented its equal opportunities policy.

ADVANCED
The Club will be an exemplar in the way that it encourages the participation of ethnic minorities at all levels of the Club and within all areas of its business activities, encompassing employees, supporters and communities.

Having already the achieved Preliminary Level, Liverpool Football is now currently working towards the Intermediate Level.

Racism has no place at Liverpool Football Club. We're bigger than that.
